Your Child's Health and Wellness Record

By Karen Melnick

When we write book reviews we usually focus on how the book's content is organized. Your Child's Health & Wellness Record flips our normal review practices upside down. You see, Karen Melnick's book is first and foremost an organizational tool for parents of children who have disabilities. With minimal, but rich, content, she creates a ready-to-go record keeping kit most parents will find easy to use.

For parents whose children are in medical crisis, good records and being able to access and use them in emergency situations is essential. Care and service providers - especially in medical situations - need adequate and accurate information in order to address the child's immediate needs. Your Child's Health and Wellness Record's user friendly format guides parents through a simple system that results in well crafted chronological records of your child's treatment history.

Melnick's kit has two parts, the Health Journal and the Document Organizer. The Health Journal contains her concise user directions as well as a multitude of charts, checklists and personal contact directories. She instructs parents on how to make entries into the Health Journal categories and shows how those entries help parents monitor their child's growth and treatment history.

The Document Organizer is a large 3-ring binder with pre-selected sections for medical, educational, insurance and receipt records, etc. with other tabs provided so that parents can customize them to meet their child's needs. The binder format, in our opinion, does a better job of keeping records intact and in order than placing the documents loosely in file or manila folders. Again, we can imagine parents spending minutes at most adding their child's latest documents to this binder and being ready to rush off with the binder at a moment's notice.

EP Magazine repeatedly has emphasized to parents the importance of keeping good records for their child, and keeping those records well-organized and accessible. Your Child's Health & Wellness Record is a wonderful resource to help parents be and remain prepared for their child's expected and unexpected health and treatment needs. We award this kit the EP Symbol of Excellence.
